Eco Friendly Sustainable Gardening tips

¨Turn off the News and Build a Garden¨ – As our ever so talented friend Lukas Nelson sings in one of his songs, thank you for the beautiful music and honestly we could not agree more.

We are really thrilled to hear about how many people during the lock down have gotten down and dirty in the soil and decided to grow a garden! Having this time at home has inspired so many to connect with their backyard and I really believe that to be an amazing positive of 2020.

Composting is probably one of the most beneficial things we can do for our garden as well as the planet. We wanted to share some tips and resources with you that we have used to make your gardens flourish even more. Firstly we want to introduce you to the Bokashi Composting System, it is so important that we nourish the soil so that our plants can thrive. There is currently a beautiful documentary about this on Netflix “Kiss the Ground¨ which we also highly recommend.

Feeding our soil is one of the most important steps we can take towards a better future for our earth, and it is as simple as composting the foods we are already using at home, instead of those food rests ending up in a landfill and rotting away, you can nourish the soil right outside your house with it and give back to mother earth.

Photo sourced from Bokashi

How great is that? You don’t even need to plant a garden, you can just nourish the earth right outside your house, with your waste products and feel good about doing your part towards climate change, or you can grow a luscious garden, with fruit and vegetables you and your friends can break bread over. Or simply plant beautiful flowers and attract bees, and humming birds into your life.

We also recommend, Eden Brothers, they have a nice selection for organic seeds. I also highly recommend these awesome biodegradable starter pots, as you can just transplant them directly into the soil without harming the roots. There is even a better garden hose option, to water your garden without the toxic chemicals from you regular hose. As you can see the options are endless.

Not only is gardening relaxing. It connects you to nature and brings you to the simplicity of nurturing your own food. I truly see it as a beneficial practice for mankind. So get outside and put the good energy into the soil, plant some seeds and reap the rewards of watching your beautiful garden grow!

I guarantee you, you will feel accomplished about doing it and we would love to hear about your gardening experiences and success stories. For more really resourceful gardening products check out our friends at Earth Easy.

Thank You!

As a woman and an actress this is an area that I really love and have a learned appreciation for, I have also used and tried many a brand over time. Conscious consumerism is something we truly value and in the beauty product world we find it to be just as essential as in anything we promote, that we can trust brands and their transparency all the way through the sourcing of materials to the packaging to taking care of their staff and doing what is best for mother earth.

These are currently a few of my top choices. I wanted to share with you, also I believe that it is good to switch your skincare around and not always use the same products because your skin is very smart and once it gets used to something its effect can be reduced, so I like to switch my products every few months and now more than ever that is possible because there are so many fantastic brands on the market that are aligned with what I seek for in a skincare line. I am listing them in no specific order other than how I tried them. I have to say that since living in Hawaii, I have been able to use absolutely no make up on my face but I am definitely more exposed to the elements, wind, sun and of course the ocean. I am also in my forties so I have looked for products with high hydrating benefits and hey, who doesn’t like to reduce a line or two! Although I am proud of my wrinkles because that only means that I have gotten this far, I like to refer to them as smile lines. However everybody likes their skin to feel hydrated and look healthy. So here goes…

Activist Skincare

Activist skincare sample product photo

One thing I really like about this brand is that they offer a small sample set, with glass bottles, also great for traveling. It is really convenient to be able to sample several products for a very fair price. And… yes I am really impressed with the products. The activist method is a 4 step process, and what I like most about it is the first step! They offer 3 different oil based cleansers that you use right on your dry skin and then rinse off, which already leaves your skin feeling super hydrated before you use toning mist, hydrating serum and nourishing oil. One of my absolute must haves is the vitamin C powder. You will just have to try it to see what I mean but my skin really soaks it up. You can use it both as a scrub or add it to your cream as a supplement which is what I do.

Activist face vitamin c scrub

Most importantly and what I really value about what Activist Skincare is their refill system. As far as I know this is one of the only brands that offers refills, so not only do you save on your carbon footprint but the refill pouch can also be returned to be recycled. So join the #refillrevolution and send back the pouch when you have used it. Love this!

When you shop with Activist, you help protect our oceans, rainforests and atmosphere. They donate 5% of their revenue to Rainforest Trust.

So feel good about your purchase and enjoy these lovely products..

Rituel Beauty

Rituel CBD oil
Our mission is to restore beauty and balance in our bodies and the planet. We do this by creating the highest quality organic skin care products using ethical practices and ancient alchemy. We are fuelled by our passion for regenerative living. – Rituel

The packaging of this brand is all recyclable or reusable which we of course love, and it looks like it has jumped right out of a 20’s movie. I got the travel set, which includes a beautiful 100 % cotton pouch. This brand is really simple and just has two products.

The rose mist and the super luxurious Sacred Serum with CBD oil (all the ingredients info here, must read) for me this Serum is an absolute winner, and not sure if it is the CBD or what but I am obsessed with the smell of the product, you are also told to spread it in your hands and take a strong inhale before you massage it on to your face. What I also love is keeping it simple, your skincare routine is taken care of in a few minutes. 1 % of their proceeds go to 1% for the Planet, it is a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through everyday action.

Osea Malibu

I myself being such an ocean girl am absolutely fascinated with this brand. Their main ingredient is seaweed, it’s benefits are truly remarkable. I love to eat it so why not include it on my skin regimen.

Of the products I have tried so far my very favourite is definitely the Undaria Argan Oil it comes as a small roller and is so handy to just throw in a handbag and simply smells spectacular. I do have to say that I have very dry skin and always have been more attracted to oils for my skin than creams but the combination of both feels super hydrating and I really like the way my skin looks in the morning when I wake up after a night time application. I really love the smell of this oil, it’s kind of mesmerising.

The cleansing milk, is really creamy in texture and smells like the ocean to me, they say to use it and rinse off, I myself like to apply it on my dry skin and then I use a reusable cleansing pad just to gently wipe it off.

Drawing inspiration from the ocean, sun, earth and atmosphere, OSEA was created with a singular intention in mind – to deliver your best skin with the highest quality ingredients. – OSEA

OSEA Is a story of a long line of women inspired by the sea, we encourage you to support and join these women on their mission, and that way you will also be supporting ours.

IMAYA BEAUTY

Have you ever heard of Aguaje Oil? Neither had I until I came across this awesome brand. It is one of the richest sources of Provitamin A in the world. It is sustainably wild harvested, sourced from the Peruvian rainforest. We were so lucky to come across this brand right as they launched their product out into the world and we are proud to say we are one of the very first to try it and review it…. and are VERY impressed, It feels light and smooth and has a very distinct smell and is a super rich and dark, it looks like liquid copper.

Angie, the creator of the Oil is running her business with these priorities in mind: Sustainability, transparency and authenticity, these are Angie’s core values and they align right with ours. 10% of her profits goes to Acate Amazon, a not-for-profit organization that plants aguaje trees in areas that have been deforested.

The bottle is protected from natural light and the packaging says so much about who they are. We wish you all the best on your product launch and will continue to be your loyal customers, and encourage that you may try it to.

Julisis

This is an extremely high end brand, and how could it not be with such ingredients as real liquid silver and gold. It’s easy to feel pampered and radiant with these ingredients.

Julisis prides itself on its natural ingredients. I have tried the facial Serum Oil and the Sun Emulsion (even this contains liquid silver). The Oil smells wonderful and is absorbed very quickly, you only need a very small quantity and I have been inclined to use it in the evening for regenerative purposes it contains White Diamond Essence, which apparently intensifies all ingredients in their efficiency. I am very curious about numerous other products and will give you more details as I get to know them better. The packaging is sleek and the serum bottle is protected by cloudy glass, I would have liked the Sunscreen not to come in a plastic bottle but hey we are all growing and evolving in this sustainable world. It is Reef Safe and that is really important to me.

JULISIS formulas are made with the most powerful medicinal healing herbs together with liquid gold and silver in the alchemy fashion.

P.S I also wanted to share with you this random gem that I absolutely fell in love with, if you have long hair and need to keep your hair out of your face you use a hair tie…. for me finding a biodegradable hair tie absolutely made my day!

Thank you for reading and sharing this article, I truly love to hear about your suggestions or even if you like any of these products yourself, don’t be shy and send us a message!

Sustainably yours,

Sanny and family

Favourite sustainable brands of summer 2020

I had so much fun discovering these fun, eco-friendly and super fashionable brands for summer 2020. We are so impressed with how many brands are making eco-friendly, sustainable choices in their businesses. We thank you so much for making these amazing products and sharing them with the world, always keeping our environment in mind.

For the Dreamers

wearing a bikini made from recycled fishing nets
¨FOR THE DREAMERS is proud to be a brand built from the ground up with sustainability at its heart. Our swimwear is made from regenerated nylon fiber from fishnets and other nylon waste found in the sea. Not only does this eco-friendly swimwear help reduce waste and landfill, but it also helps save the lives of animals we share the oceans with.¨

It is such a pleasure for us to share these very special brands that we have come across after many hours of research and truly finding companies that are aligned with our values as well as being, trendy fashionable and for me (one of the most important features) comfortable! This particular swimsuit brand For the Dreamers is the most luxurious bikini I have ever owned, it is so soft and silky yet sturdy enough for me to go surfing in it. I am obsessed, and it is reversible which I love even more. Honestly I have my eye on the on a few more from this brand because I am so impressed with the fabrics and not to mention the super classy packaging. I feel like I am wearing sexy lingerie but really its a bikini!

This is all the same bikini worn different ways and I still have not even gotten around to trying the different ways of wearing the straps. We truly hope you get to experience the luxury of owning one of these suits and at the same time feel good about purchasing from a brand that is fully sustainable and eco-friendly.

Maria Malo

Wearing an organic red dress by www.mariamalo.com

I have been a huge fan of this brand for years now, and I am not going to lie my wardrobe is probably about 30% Maria Malo, not only because I love the fabrics, designs and comfort of her timeless pieces, but also because I love the woman behind this brand and everything she stands for. Just like her collections, she is a woman with passions, sensibilities, embracing life fully and along with that she really can outfit you for any occasion. Weddings, beach parties, the Cannes film festival or simply an epic surf session, she has it all. Her love for nature and the ocean reflects in her brand and that is one of the many reasons why I love her. If you are ever in Bali go check out her amazing new flagship store.

I have not traveled to a beach without these shorts since I discovered them (I need more 🙂

Swell Vision

Light weight, classy and sustainably made with bamboo, you can barely feel you are even wearing glasses. They are polarized and look just as good on him than they do on her, if I may say so myself 🙂 What we most love about this brand is their dedication to our future generations, Swell Vision is a sponsor for the Green School in Bali, supporting our future green change-makers. So we highly recommend them for their products as well as their support to our green community.

With each product sold we are working together to leave this place better than we found it, by creating and promoting a sustainable consumer culture. Thank you for standing with Swell and voting with your dollar to make a positive impact on the future of our planet. – Swell Vision

We recommend people to wear polarized sunglasses because they protect the eyes from U/V Rays. So next time you are shopping for glasses find the sustainable way and feel good about what you paid.

Mirame Swim

Mirame is a direct translation from Spanish.  It is a command statement that means “Look at Me.”  Melinda chose this name because it is confident, powerful, and sexy.  When a woman walks down the beach wearing a Mirame suit, people won’t be able to help but look.

We discovered Mirame Swim very recently but they have already earned a place in our hearts. The collection is super original and she also uses fabrics that she rescues from ending up in a landfill. I spend so much time in the sun that I really like a little coverage, especially if I am at the beach in the middle of the day.

I love the feel of this piece and I have to be honest, every single time I have worn it someone on the beach asks me where I got it! Which we love, because that leads us into the conversation of supporting brands such as these. What is really great about these suits, is that you can also throw on a cute skirt or shorts and you are ready for a fancy dinner! Especially with some of her very fancy swim tops, check her site to see what we are talking about.

So wether you are sipping on a glass of white wine at the cote d´azure or jumping in the ocean for a quick session, Mirame has the right suit for you!

Soloeyewear

Solo eyewear is also on our list, with amazing polarized lenses that make the world look a whole lot nicer when you look through them. They work with repurposed wood, repurposed bamboo and Cellulose Acetate (Cellulose acetate is an eco-friendly material made from cellulose obtained from wood produced in sustainably managed forests . After disposal, it returns to nature through the activity of water and microorganisms.)

At SOLO Eyewear, we create environmentally responsible sunglasses that restore vision for people in need. We strongly believe in living a life of adventure and inspiring individuals to change the world – Solo eyewear

So as you can see they are not only doing the right thing but they are giving back to the world, helping people in need. Can you imagine a world where we all did that? We can make that happen by supporting these amazing brands that are truly making a difference, and casting our vote where we spend our money. I really want to remind people how important each and every one of our actions is, and the impact it has. We have been researching the sustainable world for almost a decade now and it is so wonderful to see all these amazing brands, and the people behind them, supporting each other and the mission to give back to our earth! Thank you!!!! For if you are reading this you are a part of my soul family… thank you for taking the time to research for the better option.

Solo has also developed a pair of glasses that protects your eyes from blue rays, with a clip on sunglasses part. They have also shared with us a secret new product and we very much look forward to sharing it with you as soon as they are ready!

Barzee Swim

These beautiful beach towels speak for themselves, the story behind why Barzee was created is also really touching, thank you for sharing your story with us Barzee.

I am a mom and going to the beach with a toddler can be a bit of a mission, I was not aware that there were towels out in the world, that dried quickly, don’t collect sand and are light to carry. Sound like a dream come true? These towels really do all that, and aesthetically they are absolutely beautiful. You can use them at the beach, by the pool or even as cozy blanket when the sun starts setting. Atlantis new favourite sentence is ¨Breast in towel Mommy¨ that means he wants to be wrapped up in the Barzee and breastfeed on the beach! So I guess my Barzee was just stolen from me. I am alright with that, we will be sure to get a few more so we don’t have to fight about them. Not only is the story of Barzee a beautiful one but 15% of ALL profits go to providing clean drinking water and restoring eyesight in developing countries. After using these towels for the last few weeks and learning more about the mission of this brand we 100% approve and recommend you try a Barzee towel.

Here at Barzee, in Nicholas’ memory,  we are committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of the less fortunate. After careful consideration, we have partnered with several highly rated, accountable and transparent charities with proven records in developing countries.- Barzee

Wool and Prince and Wool and

These photos are not retouched! I know I know the water is a really nice color, but seriously how about the T-shirt! Iñaki absolutely loves it, he is even teaching yoga in it! This brand was a really fun find for us, as you can imagine living on an island you really don’t think about wearing merino wool. To our surprise Merino wool is actually great, its quick drying, temperature regulating, breathable and odor resistant. So to top it off you don’t have to wash it that much, an all in all super find for our capsule wardrobes. It feels super soft to the touch and has a certain weight in it which I really like it a t-shirt. I really have been looking for the right black tank top, the one you can wear to any occasion, this one is extra convenient because you can wear it back to front and change the neck line. They also carry it in off white and I think that is a good place to start using less clothing.

So I have to say the pockets are the best part of this dress but I am also excited to take it with me to colder climates, I could see myself in Berlin on a winter day in tights, a scarf and a big oversized jacket slurping on a hot chocolate too! We are really grateful about the merino wool discovery and are already looking for Atlantis to get onboard the island wool crew! Less washing, less resources, and better options.

Somebody said to me today ¨I am buying all these products and I feel really good about my purchases- Thank you!¨that made my day because that is our mission here at @ecocouple to make people feel good about when they do need to purchase something, and to raise awareness about how things are made, how, and where it goes when we are done with it. We also always encourage second hand purchases, and swapping with friends.

A small way we can really help all these brands is by following them, each other, on social media channels, liking and commenting on their products, sharing it with friends… this way we will always expand our eco conscious family a little more. If you liked this post you also may really love ¨Support sustainable brands on Hawaii¨

Thank you for reading.

Erin the founder has taken her brand to the next level, even some of her packaging is biodegradable. Definitely an inspiring local brand we should be supporting.

From organic cotton, to linen to tencel there is something for every occasion. We are thrilled with this find, and I am thinking I may have to add their little black dress to my island wardrobe.

Ti & CoCo, comes from the Ti Leaf and the Coconut, two plants that are sacred in Polynesian culture. The Ti Leaf is a symbol of the companies mission to be green, while the Coconut signifies clean water, which is vital for an everlasting planet

Mamanu Kids

We highly recommend the many beautiful hats of Mamanu, they are mostly reversible which we also really love….. And everytime he wears them someone comments on how lovely he looks…

Hand made on Hawaii, with sustainable organic fabrics, Anna brings these beautiful creations to life.

Blue Bottle Love

I can only say it is exactly as the name describes it, blue bottle love. The bottle is absolutely gorgeous and imprints love onto every sip you drink from it. After extensive research my favourite water is taken from a natural spring, filtered through our Berkey system and then last but not least placed into our beautiful cobalt bottles! This makes the most delicious water you could ever drink.

Here at Blue Bottle love we have a Mission to spread the healing vibrations of Love, Peace, Harmony and Gratitude, and to weave a crystalline grid of Unity consciousness anchored in the wisdom, beauty and power of water! – Blue Bottle Love

Our favorite Eco friendly Stroller

Traveling with a baby is no joke! Most parents know exactly what I am talking about. However you buy your first stroller before you have had these experiences….and then learn about all the annoying non useful things about it when you already own it! Instead of focusing on the strollers we didn’t like we want to focus on our very favourite stroller on the market: The Bumbleride

Anyhow so here we are as a family traveling through airports, on trains and automobiles…. Curving through cold city streets in snowy white Hamburg, to strolling the beaches of Tarifa in the south of Spain or simply taking a walk through Los Angeles…. what do we need to look out for when purchasing a stroller before we can even think about how green it is?

Is it versatile? Does it have small or big wheels? Does it fold up easily? How heavy is it? Is it comfortable for the little one to take his naps in? Will it work when he is a little older? Can I go for a run with it? Does it have storage space? This strollers has all these features as well as being able to get a car seat adapter and drinks holder if you so please.

You never really think about that if you spend some time in a city with cobble streets, your baby might wake up ten times when you try to put him down for a nap… Or you may want to take a stroll on the beach spontaneously and not get stuck in the sand. Or you may want to go to a music festival and take your little one with you! If you are an adventurer and like to be spontaneous all of these factors are important. So we made it a mission to find the most versatile, eco-friendly stroller on the market. It has plenty of storage, a front lock wheel and big tires with great suspension (our first stroller had zero suspension) which means you can take a sleeping baby anywhere! This is a huge plus for us, especially while Iñaki is out searching for the perfect wave.

What we love most, is not only that Bumbleride has created the perfect stroller for us and our adventures, but most importantly they have done it keeping our planet in mind….and that is why we consider the Bumbleride the best stroller on the market today and are absolutely exstatic to be collaborating with them.

Top Choices for Eco friendly shoe brands (Vegan)

Verdura shoes (Italy)

This shoe comes in at number one for us….. not only is it stylish, vegan and just simply beautifully crafted. Not a day goes by that I do not get stopped on the street when I wear them. The shoe fits your feet like a glove, especially after wearing them in for a few days….. it is super comfortable and most importantly, eco conscious. From vegan leather to recycled fishing nets, this shoe exceeds every expectation from a vegan friendly shoe.

Beautifully handcrafted italian shoe made with recycled fishing nets
Every detail is hand made and sourced locally in Tuscany

Hand crafted in Tuscany, Italy. With every detail sourced locally even using natural dyes, making each and every pair unique. Wether it is out and about with a pair of summer shorts or a fancy dress these shoes make their mark wherever they go…..and we are beyond ecstatic to have found them!!!!!

Love for the planet is in the heart of Verdura as well as love for beauty and for the aesthetics” -Verdura

Beyond Skin (UK)

Every girl needs a good pair of high heels in her closet, so why not make it a vegan pair. This high heel is an all time classic style and by far one of my favourites, I absolutely love the peek a boo toe. This is a classic, timeless design that can always be worn. Dress them down with a pair of jeans, wear them on a red carpet or to a wedding. The shoe fits for every special occasion.

Their sustainable and leather-free footwear is all ethically and beautifully handmade in Spain. They have a beautiful selection of vegan shoes

Quoting Beyond Skin and a very interesting fact we did not know: ¨On average, one cow hide will provide 18 pairs of leather shoes and each pair of shoes is accountable for the use of over 1.4 million litres of water! This figure includes the water used to rear and slaughter the cow, and to process the hide in to leather.
Put simply, each time you purchase a new pair of leather shoes you are responsible for using as much water as having a bath everyday for over 40 years! In terms of disposal you’d think that leather products would be biodegradable, but the tanning agent renders it non biodegradable.¨

To me this is enough reason to look for a more sustainable option!

Simple Shoes (USA)

For a classic comfortable sneaker for men and women we have landed on these super comfy shoes. ¨Simple innovation in the form of an organic cotton canvas sneaker. A timeless style that will become a wardrobe staple. The textile lined memory foam insoles support and cushion your every step for maximum comfort.

simple shoes and skateboard made from recycled fishing nets
Even the skateboard is made from recycled fishing nets (carver)

There are no harmful dyes used and the materials are held together with eco-friendly water based glues. The flat cotton laces are made from 100% recycled cotton; and yes, it is a vegan shoe.  A classic organic cotton canvas sneaker that goes well with whatever music is playing.¨ Now how would you chose any other sneaker over this one….¨memory sole insoles are absolutely something worth a try!

GUMBIES (USA, UK, EU and AUSTRALIA)

These may be the most comfortable flip flops we have ever owned, Iñaki loves them just as much as I do! Inspired by tires and made from recycled rubber these flip flops have their own unique look and are truly a great price. We hope to own many more of them, and there are so many wonderful colours to choose from, we have yet to try the cork flip flops but do not doubt that they will probably be amazing too.

Gumbies Islander flip flops

The Outback Slipper is made using 8 recycled plastic bottles, how amazing is that. For more info read up on it on their website. There is nothing greater than a good surf session and then slipping into a nice warm slipper, no matter what part of the world you happen to be in.

After a good surf session at hookipa, Hawaii

So all in all we have introduced you to our favourite eco conscious shoe brands for every and any occassion and look forward to hearing from you to discover more brands you would love to share with us!

Eco Friendly Acupressure Mats by Spoonk

Accupresse Mat by Spoonk

Years ago…I met someone that changed my life… he worked with Marma Therapy, I had just had a horrible accident and was having difficulty healing my torn hamstring. I was explained that I needed to get the blood flowing in that area….and voila.. I was introduced to my first acupressure mat. I used it to put pressure on the area and get the circulation moving. I then discovered how wonderful I felt by simply walking on it every morning for a few minutes. I remember distinctly breaking out in a a sweat the first time I walked for about three minutes…I felt activated and alive my injury healed very soon after.

Years later on my trip to Maui, we had rented a house from a friend of ours, she had the Spoonk mat, I remembered my old mat that I eventually lost on my travels. When looking into the company I found that this was the new and improved version….made from hemp and ABS plastic….

this was right up my alley. I had to contact with the company right away. Well what can I say…we hit it off!!! Not only do they have mat in all sizes….they also carry A magnetic roller that just feels amazing when you roll it down your back! Use it before yoga or before throwing on a pair of heels!

I have recently started using it also for better sleep by lying on it before going to bed...which is imperative at this point of my life...being a new mother and all. What I most love is what I mentioned earlier...to lightly tread on the Mat first thing in the morning. I can feel it activating every part of me. When you first start out you may want to wear light socks.

Update: I have been using the mat for over a year now, and honestly I love it so much, even if I feel a headache coming on, I roll it up and place it under my neck, and the headache just goes away! I truly recommend this product!

Conscious Traveler: Maui, Hawaii 🇺🇸

We have been blessed with the opportunity to have traveled to Maui, Hawaii for almost two months. Iñaki was competing in a windsurfing contest, The Aloha Classic (IWT), a life long dream, and I was blessed to enjoy motherhood and continue researching eco conscious brands. Upon arrival we came across a wonderful photographer…that took some of the pictures in this article….who not only did the shoot with us but also recommended some of the amazing brands we ended up collaborating with. Thank you Chelsea! If you are headed for Maui it is definitely worth it to capture this stunning place with some beautiful photographic memories.

Maui was especially fun as we not only came across really inspiring brands but also made friends for life. Our first stop was Mana foods, of course  we had to stock up for our adventures. Surprisingly the prices are quite similar to Los Angeles. Mana foods is also the place you can be quite entertained simply standing in front of the store, you may be serenaded by a harp or find yourself philosophising about God and the world, you know what I mean if you have been there. This is where we found our water source now we just needed to find the right container.

We were so very blessed to meet Kayden, of Blue Bottle Love, we were taken into her humble abode. Surrounded by beams of sunlight filtered by the cobalt  blue bottles ….making her home and workspace even more magical. Our meeting turned into a 5 hour extravaganza, including everything from Meditation to the whole story of how Blue Bottle Love came about.

From that day on… at least one blue bottle (1 gallon:-) made it with us wherever we would go. The water tasted clean, conscious and simply delicious.

Iñaki was windsurfing every day and getting ready for the competition, now the sun is strong in Maui so it was imperative we found the right sunscreen, that was reef safe to keep us all protected while making sure we were not harming our environment. That is when we came across Raw Love Sunscreen Jenna also received us in her home and explained to us about all the harmful ingredients sunscreens use and how they damage the reefs and coral.  We were so excited about this knowledge that we decided to speak to the people of IWT (International Windsurfing Tour) and got Raw Love Sunscreen to become a sponsor for the event, thereby educating and keeping us and the nature around us safe.

We also came across a very innovative brand located right in Paia. Ellemer we wrote a separate article on them check it out for a discount code.

One of the brands we were very happy to find was was Green Toy. You can purchase them at the organic food market ¨Down to Earth” – really close to the airport and Kanaha beach. Being on Maui and having fun toys for the beach is imperative and these ones are made from recycled milk bottles, how cool is that, so we had to get in touch with the brand and test them out. Atlantis, our son, loves them, they are perfect for the beach and the bath tub. The boat even turns into a watering can.

Chelsea suggested so many other local brands that are fully green-eco; on an Island you especially realise how important it is to consume less and make wiser choices. All and all we are so happy to have had the chance to experience Maui and visit its gems like Lumeria (best home made veggie burger I have ever tried), or the lavender fields, the local farmers market, also if you invest in a fruit picker and have a good eye you can eat fruit right from the trees, a must try the local banana bread on the road to Hana (We recommend you download a guide before heading out in the very early hours of the morning, as you will lose reception and there are many magical stops to make), taste the orange passion fruits and the delicious papayas, there is also a local Kombucha brewery in Haiku…but be warned too much kombucha and you might get a booch high as they like to call it (don’t drink and drive)……. Last but not least our favorite restaurants by far…. Nuka sushi in Haiku…. Go for the elaborate rolls…. And for a delicious organic pizza…. Flatbread company in Paia is the place to go!

Lastly we came across a really special store and brand, in Lahaina, they have the most beautiful swimsuits made of recycled ghost nets….. They are very orginal in their designs and I absolutely love mine!!!!! Kelley Chapman the owner of Manakai is a true eco goddess and lives and breathes a sustainable lifestyle…. Please check out her blog and amazing projects! 💕 MANAKAI

One really great insider tip: at the Kuau store, if you wait to the end of the day, you can get their Ahi Poke for half price, and it is DELICIOUS!! If you have been to Maui you know it isn’t cheap to eat…. So that is a good one…. Speaking of savings… It is absolutely worth it to get a costco card…. The gasoline is waaay cheaper and they have lots of delicious organic food in bulk!

One more thing, don’t miss the sunsets on the south side of the island, or the sunrises for that matter, thousand peaks for example. So many things pop into my mind… Try the Açai at Choice, and the Fish tacos at the Fish Market….. It is a place to revisit for sure!

Thousand peaks is also a great spot to go surfing for anyone…. From beginner to advanced, there is a peak for everyone…. Hence the name.

As for the windsurfing spots…. This island is a playground for all levels… . For the more advanced windsurfer you can pretty much find conditions at ho’okipa every other day… And for the not so skilled, kanaha works pretty much every day! Both places are about thirty minutes apart.

If you are visiting maui with children we highly recommend the Maui Ocean Centre…. The tunnel is an experience to remember, especially for the little ones, and they have a lot of amazing info on helping and preserving marine life.

To finish this article we wanted to share an experience we had: During the IWT Windfsurfing Competition, we participated in an ocean clean up: in Hookipa this can be tricky: We were only a few people and it was about to be cancelled due to the big swell that was hitting the spot. Both Boojma and me (Sanny) decided to do it anyway, and in the end most of the people decided to get wet and join us. We ended up collecting about 60 masts, and some booms, fins….. the point is if you are enjoying the island, leave it cleaner than you found it so that future generations can enjoy it as much as we did.

Elle Mer Eco Swimwear 🇺🇸

When recently visiting the island of Maui we did some research on brands that were trying to have a positive influence on our environment…. We will post a more detailed blog in the near future…. for now we wanted to single out one of them: Elle Mer is a company that makes their swimwear from recycled fishing nets and produce in their own little factory in Paia, Maui. We went to visit and loved what we saw…. Here a few of my favourites… I was very postpartum in these photos but a proud mama 🙂
